He completed a course of study in the Clarion State Normal school, after which he taught school for two years. He then became a student in the Wittenberg College, at Springfield, Ohio, and in that institution was graduated as a member of the class of 1901. For one year thereafter he traveled for the Young Men's Christian Association in the northwest, and in 1903 became college secretary to China, spending most of his time in that country.
