He received a preparatory education in the public schools of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, then in 1873 entered Bethlehem College, but did not finish the full course. He worked on his father's farm and followed lumbering until 1905, when he moved to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was an active and prominent Democrat and influential in the party. Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.
