From boyhood he was trained to agricultural pursuits, which he continued to follow. After his marriage, he bought 107 acres adjoining the family homestead, and came to own 239 acres of well-cultivated land, where he carried on a general farming and stock raising. He took an interest in public questions, voted with the Republican party, was prominently identified with educational progression, and served as a member of the school board. In religious faith he was a member of the Disciple Church.
