He studied medicine with Dr. O. D. Palmer of Zelienople, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Jefferson Medical College in 1853. He began his professional career in Prospect, Butler County, in 1859 and for fifty years he was one of the most successful physicians in the western part of the county.
