General Notes: Husband - James Erastus Smith

He both worked on the farm and attended school until he was about twenty years of age, after which he left his studies permanently and devoted his time to agricultural pursuits and his trade as a carpenter.

Civil War: he enlisted in 1864, joining Company G, One Hundredth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Round Heads." In the ranks of that command he participated in the fierce battles of the Wilderness waged by the Army of the Potomac, was wounded in the knee and sent to the hospital. He was able to return to his company and engage in the battle at Petersburg. He participated in the grand review at Washington, and was finally mustered out of the service at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in July, 1865. He then returned to his former pursuits.
He was a member of Thompson Post, G. A. R., No. 417, at Sheakleyville, and gave much of his time to useful service in connection with the public affairs of the township, having been honored with such offices as those of supervisor, member of the school board and judge of election. In his church connections he was identified with the Baptist faith.
