He was educated in the common schools of Rostraver township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, after which he followed farming for a period of twenty years and then, in 1883 embarked in the business of butchering. He owns property in Webster where he lived. He was a political follower of Jefferson and active worker for his party.
