He was reared in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, where he learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed fourteen years, but in 1879 he became a foreman at Beaver Falls Steel Works.
Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church. He was a member of the I. O. O. F., and Equitable Aid Union; politically he was a Democrat.
