He obtained his early education in the common schools, and also taught for five years in the public schools of Clarion County, Pennsylvania. In 1891 he graduated at the Clarion Normal, after which he taught for two terms, and then entered the Washington and Jefferson College, graduating at that institution in the spring of 1897. In the fall of that year he entered the Allegheny Theological Seminary, where he prepared for the Presbyterian ministry. At the early age of twenty years he was elected elder of the Presbyterian Church with which he was connected, and also served as superintendent of the Sunday-school.

He was educated at the Clarion normal school, the Washington and Jefferson college, and the Western theological seminary at Allegheny city. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson college in 1897, and from the Western theological seminary in 1900, and was ordained to the ministry Oct. 16, 1900, as pastor of Beulah church, near Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
