He lived on the old family homestead in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and followed agricultural pursuits, having also learned the trade of tanner and currier.
He was assessor of his township, was on the board of election, and filled other positions of trust. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church; he was a Republican.
