He was reared on the farm and attended the common schools in Mercer County, then the Pine Grove Academy (later Grove College), graduating in the classical course, from Allegheny College at Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1887. He taught one year in the public schools and one year in Barkeyville Academy, where he was instructor in Greek and Higher Mathematics. He then entered the law department of the Boston University, graduating in 1890. He was admitted to the bar in the autumn of 1890, in Mercer, and immediately began the practice of his profession. He was district attorney three years-1893-96. Politically, a Republican, he served as county committeeman three years-1904-05-06. In his church connection he is a Methodist Episcopal, and was one of the official board of the church. He also served as president of the school board at Mercer.
