General Notes: Husband - Thomas Read

He became a Presbyterian minister after graduation (1766) at the Philadelphia Academy (now University of Pennsylvania) under Dr. Francis Alison. He was a member of New Castle Presbytery and in charge of "Old Drawyers" (Delaware) and New London (Pennsylvania) churches for a time. During the Revolutionary period he resided at Newark, Delaware, where he became tutor, trustee and then president of Newark Academy (now University of Delaware). Later, and to the time of his death, he officiated at the First and Second Presbyterian churches at Wilmington. He served as a chaplain during the Revolution and allusion has been made in church history to particular patriotic services rendered in aid of the movement of General Washington's army through the back country after the landing of British troops at Head of Elk preparatory to the Battle of Brandywine.
He was twice married.
