After receiving a common school education, he spent three years at Sharpsburg Academy, preparing for a college course, taught school for two years, and then entered Jefferson Medical College, at Philadelphia, PA, in 1883, where he was grad­uated April 2, 1885. He was resident physician at the Women's Hospital, West Philadelphia, for six months, and then located at Mars, Butler County, PA, where he then engaged in the practice of his profession. He was surgeon for the Pittsburg and Western Railway Company. He was a president of the Butler County Medical Society, and was one of its active and most useful members. He was a member of the State Medical Society, also of the National Association of Railway Surgeons. He was a trustee in Mars United Presbyterian church, and in, politics, he was a Republican. He was elected a delegate to the Republican State Convention of 1894, having the largest vote in the county.
