His mother died when he was young and he was reared by his brother William. He was educated in the public school and began business life as a tool dresser in the Venango County, Pennsylvania, oil fields. He followed this vocation for several years in the oil fields of Pennsylvania and New York state, coming to Kane, McKean County, in 1885. He became interested in several Kane industries, operated in oil and gas, organized the Valley Gas Company, and was engaged actively in business until his death. He was a Republican in politics, and was reared in the Presbyterian church, but three months prior to his death joined the Roman Catholic church, the faith of his wife.

After the death of her first husband, she resided in Youngstown, Ohio, her unmarried children making their home with her. She married again, but separated from him because of friction over her children, her husband not wishing to have her children reside with him.
