He was crippled for part of his life.

He moved to Ohio with his parents in 1840. He remained on the farm till 1869, when he moved to Middleport, Meigs County, where he resided till his death which occurred. He learned the cooper's trade and on moving to Middleport, engaged with his brother William in the cooper business
