General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Proudfit

She was a person of uncommon energy and commanding spirit. In her youth spinning and weaving were arts practiced in every farmer's household, and she was expert in both. It is said that in spinning wool she easily doubled the usual day's work. She was ready in conversation, and fond of the society of young people. A nephew reports a characteristic remark. She was asserting very positively that under no circumstances would she have done as had one of her friends, when her nephew, knowing her uncompromising Calvinism, said, "But, Aunt Betsey, you know if it was foreordained that you should do so, you'd have had to do it." "I wouldn't," she retorted, "I'd have broken the decrees first"\emdash an answer that can be appreciated only by those who have been brought up under the full rigor of Scottish orthodoxy.

The early part of he married life was spent on her husband's farm in Moscow, Hillsdale County, Michigan. About 1860 they moved to Centerville, St. Joseph County.
