He was about seven years old when the family moved to Jamestown, New York. At the age of eighteen he entered the the law office of C. R. Lockwood of Jamestown, under whom he studied for three years and in the autumn of 1888 he entered the Buffalo Law School graduating in 1890 and was admitted to the bar. While he was qualified to practice in all the courts of State of New York, he didn't practice his profession, but conducted a general real estate business in Jamestown. He was one of the organizers of the Jamestown Metal Furniture Company, serving as it's president until its consolidation with Art Metal Company, one of the leading and most sucessful businesses in Western New York State. He always took a prominent part in development of the city and suburbs, Maple Springs on Chautauqua Lake and Allen Park being two of his promotions. He served in the NY National Guard for four years in well known Genton Guards. He was a member of B.P.O.E. (Eagles), and in 1897 was exalted ruler of Jamestown Lodge No. 263. He was affiliated with Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge F. and A. M. Western Star Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Jamestown Commandary, Knights Templer Ismailia Temple, Nobles of Mystic Shrine. He was a Republican and a member of the Presbyterian Church.
