He received a business education, and was engaged in mercantile pursuits at Roxbury, Pennsylvania, until 1879, when he opened a dry goods store in Chambersburg, and was a member of the dry goods firm of Pomeroy & Mackey until 1901, when he retired. He was later living at Bridgeport, Ohio.
