He was born near Greensburg, in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he carried on farming for some years, afterwards removing to Burrell township where he later died. He devoted his life to the pursuits of agriculture and was a man of great energy and strength, an incessant toiler and a successful farmer.
He and his wife belonged to the Reformed church.
