ROCKLAND TOWNSHIP MAN, WHO VOTED FOR LINCOLN, DIES
By Helen J. Morrison, Derrick Correspondent
JOSEPH SHREFFLER, 90, lifelong resident of Rockland Township, Venango County, and one of the best known residents of this entire section, died at his home at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon May 21, 1934 following a brief illness. Mr. Shreffler, one of the most colorful figures in northwestern Pennsylvania, outstanding in that he cast his ballot in the second election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency in 1864, fell and fractured his hip 10 days ago. At the time he was forced to bed by his injury he entertained a presentment that he would not recover.
Always Cast Ballot
The aged Rockland Township resident, when a young man between 20 and 21 years, saddled one of his farm horses and rode eight miles over a newly cut, rough woods road to Davis' Corners where he voted for the first time and for Lincoln. Since that time he has been affiliated with the Republican Party and his record of having cast a vote for Abraham Lincoln and of never having missed an election since is perhaps unequalled by any other citizen in the United States.
Mr. Shreffler was born in Rockland Township in 1844, the fifth of a family of 14 children born to Joseph Shreffler Sr. and Catherine Mitchell Shreffler, who were pioneer settlers from east of the mountains. When a young man he was united in marriage to Eleanor Platt, and to this union 13 children were born, 10 of whom are still living. Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Shreffler went to housekeeping on the farm which he attained by purchase and there the couple spent the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Shreffler died eight years ago. The homestead is known as the Joseph Shreffler farm and is located a short distance off the Lakes-to-Sea highway on the Emlenton road. A son, Samuel Agustus Shreffler, and family, resided with Mr. Shreffler on the homestead place.
Followed Farming Occupation
The deceased followed the occupation of farming all of his life, never having been lured away by the exciting times of the early oil boom, although his farm was operated successfully for oil about 35 years ago. However, farming was his line and his years of quiet, temperate, industrious toil earned him happiness and long life and the respect of all who were acquainted with him. Mr. Shreffler is survived by two sons, Joseph of Mariasville, Samuel at home and the following daughters, Mrs. Harvey Bickle, Van; Mrs. Charles Say, Nickleville; Mrs. K. Mong, Franklin; Mrs. Daniel McCormick, Oklahoma; Mrs. Harry Bly, Nickleville; Mrs. Louis Berkholder, Nickleville; Mrs. John Hetzler, Rockland, and Mrs. Clarence Dittman of Texas. With the death of the aged Rockland resident, a brother Andrew Shreffler, of Hadley, remains the only surviving member of the family of 14. A telegram has been received by the family of Mr. Shreffler stating that Mrs. Clarence Dittman of Texas, a daughter, will be here to attend the funeral. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Burial will take place in Valley Cemetery, Richland Township, Venango County, PA.
