He was educated at Wyoming Seminary, taught school several years, afterwards graduating from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, then entered the law office of William G. Hurley, at Bloomsburg. He was admitted to the Columbia County bar in 1856, and on January 6, 1857, was admitted to the bar of Luzerne County, where he then established a practice.
