General Notes: Husband - Alexander Barnhart


He was reared in Unity township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he received his education in the common schools. He then learned the trade of butchering with his father and in 1864 he opened a butcher shop at Pleasant Unity which he conducted till 1875. For the next five years he was engaged in the lumber business and operated a saw mill in order to fill the bills which he received during that period of time. In 1880 he returned to Pleasant Unity where he opened a butchering establishment and meat market. In politics he was a democrat until last fall when he affiliated himself with the Prohibition party and voted for its nominees. He was a member of the Order of Chosen Friends and Pleasant Unity Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was also class-leader and trustee and superintendent of its Sunday school.
