General Notes: Husband - John De Alva Sheakley

He attended the neighborhood district schools until he was eighteen years of age, remaining on the home farm until he attained his majority, when he left for a California prospecting tour. After a year, however, he returned to Sheakleyville and after remaining here on the home farm for another year he married. In 1882 his father made him a gift of the old farm, upon which he continued to reside until 1893, when he succeeded to the auctioneering business of M. Wheeler. This was the oldest and most substantial business of its kind in the county and was materially increased through the persistency, shrewdness and ability of Mr. Sheakley, his operations covering not only Mercer but several adjoining counties in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. In politics he was a Democrat and served for two terms as a member of the village school board. His fraternal relations were with the Odd Fellows, Misbeth Lodge No. 59, of South Sharon, Pennsylvania, and with the Knights of the Maccabees, of New Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He was a stanch member of the Baptist church of Sheakleyville.
