He was partly educated in the common school, then entered the Fairfield Academy. At sixteen years of age, he became a student at a medical college; at twenty-two years of age, at Castleton, Vermont; then attended the Albany, New York, Medical College; thence to college in Buffalo, New York, where he obtained the degree of M. D. He practiced, first in Crawford County five years, thence went to Erie County, Pennsylvania, practicing in Union Township a short time, and in 1865 came to Corry, where he was very successful, and obtained an enviable reputation as surgeon. His son, a talented young practitioner, will in time take his father's place in the profession. Drs. B. E. Phelps, Sr. and Jr., were later located at Wattsburg, Erie County, Pennsylvania, following their profession.
