assisted his father on the farm until he was eighteen years old. From that time until he was thirty-five or forty years old he spent most of his time chopping and clearing land for neighbors and people all over the country. "When I was a young man my arm was strong, my axe had a keen, sharp edge, at every stroke the chips flew like birds in the air, the trees fell before me like in a wind storm." When his father sold his farm and moved to Mercer, Turner went with him. After about ten years his sister died and his father broke up housekeeping. He then made his home with his brother Robert, and went to peddling patent medicine. "Some people called me Dr. Patterson, of a small practice, but I leave off the Dr. and sell the medicine."
