General Notes: Husband - Charles Sidney Passavant

For a number of years he was associated with his brother Detmar in a wholesale business at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from which he withdrew in 1840 and returned to Zelienople to take charge of the business from which his father was retiring, and he continued to conduct that store until his death. His responsibilities were immediately assumed by his son, Charles Sidney, who, in turn, continued the operation of the same store until its destruction by fire, in 1902. The passing of that old landmark was very generally regretted for it had connected the begin-ning of the civilization of the place with the culture and business importance of the time. In all those years the Passavants had been leading factors in the town's development.

He received his schooling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he remained to conduct a wholesale grocery business, before returning to his birthplace at the age of twenty-three, to assist his father in business. He purchased the store in 1848, and operated it for forty-six years, or until his death in 1894, at which time it was taken over by his son, Charles Sidney Passavant, Jr.
A staunch Republican throughout his years, he was never a seeker of political office, although he had the honor of being elected a member of the Borough Council upon several occasions, serving from 1878 to 1880, and from 1882 to 1884. He was one of the organizers of the English Lutheran Church of Zelienople, January 21, 1845, and at the celebration of its fiftieth anniversary, he was the only one of the original members surviving. For the half century he had been treasurer of the church. He had become a member of a religious body before 1845, for he had joined first St. Paul's German Lutheran Church, which had been founded in 1822.
