General Notes: Husband - James Moorhead Murdoch

He attended the Pittsburgh public schools and Shadyside Academy, Pittsburgh, after which he became a student in the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University, from which he graduated in 1890 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. He then entered the medical school of the University of Pittsburgh, and in 1892 graduated there with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Later, Dr. Murdoch took post-graduate work in his chosen field at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Murdoch had a year of interneship at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh, and then became pathologist and assistant physician at Dixmont Hospital, an institution for mental patients just outside of Pittsburgh. He held this position from 1893 to 1896 and in the latter year was made superintendent of the Polk State School for Mental Defectives at Polk, Pennsylvania. During the last year of his residence in Dixmont, Dr. Murdoch also served as instructor in neuropathology at the University of Pittsburgh. He was the author of "Feeble Mindedness" and many miscellaneous papers on mentally defective children; and numerous articles on "Mental Diseases and Deficiency" have appeared in the "Pennsylvania Medical Journal" and the "Journal of Psycho-Asthenics" under his signature. In this comparatively new field of the scientific study of the mentally defective and their treatment, Dr. Murdoch is one of the outstanding figures. He held membership in the American Medical Association, the American Association for the study of the Feeble Minded, of which he is ex-president, and the Pittsburgh Neurological Society, also in the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the Venango County Medical Society. Dr. Murdoch was one of the directors of the Franklin Trust Company of Franklin. He was affiliated with the Free and Accepted Masons and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and among his clubs were the Franklin Club, Wanango Club, the Yale Club of New York City, the Duquesne Club of Pittsburgh, and the University Club of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
