General Notes: Husband - Samuel Miller Reed

He was a grandson of General William Reed, who served in the War of 1812.

He was educated in the public schools, served as clerk in a dry goods store and also in a drug store, and for twenty years or more was engaged in the manufacture of paper at New Alexandria, Pennsylvania. From 1860 to 1892 he had charge of the transfer department of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Pittsburgh. He was offered a nomination for congress but declined the honor. In politics he was first an old-line Whig, and later an ardent Republican. He was all his life a devoted Christian, having desired at the early age of seven or eight years to be admitted to church membership, but being refused on account of his youth he united at a later period with the Presbyterian church, in which for forty vears he served as elder. The body in which he held this office was the New Alexandria Presbyterian church, his name appearing on the roll of its contributors.
