He passed his youth on the family farm, receiving a limited education, although his inclinations led him to improve every possible opportunity. In addition to his vocation of general farming was for eighteen years engaged in threshing. He was a worker in the Democratic party. He was a member of the U. B. Church, and his wife of the C. P. Church at Old Concord.
