General Notes: Husband - Samuel Oakes

Seven years old when with his mother, brothers and sisters he crossed the Atlantic, he was brought up and educated in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. When but a boy, he began working in the mines, becoming familiar with the work, and continued thus employed for a number of years. He was subsequently an operator, and in 1904, with his brothers, Caleb and William, opened the Oakes Brothers' mine, in Springfield township, where they operated most successfully, their output being large and satisfactory.
