General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] Oak - Oakes

The Oakes family, which was represented in the revolution, in the War of 1812, in the Civil War, and the Spanish-American war, can be divided into four nearly equal classes. First, the descendants of Nathaniel Oak, who was born about 1645, in England or Wales, and emigrated to Marlboro, now Northboro, Massachusetts, about 1660 or 1665. Second, the branch descended from Thomas and Edward Oakes, who came from England to Massachusetts before 1640. The family is best known through its most prominent member, the Rev. Uriah Oakes, who was one of the earliest presidents of Harvard College. Third, a miscellaneous class, the largest element springing from German immigrants who settled in New York and Pennsylvania, writing their names originally Och or Ochs. Fourth, the branch of the family which is thought to be related to the first and second ones mentioned, and that of the immediate ancestors of the family under consideration.
