He was educated in public schools, McKeesport Academy and Duff's Business College, Pittsburgh, and after finishing his school years returned home and assisted in cultivating the home farm. He then rented a farm in the township which he cultivated for five years, until the year 1900. In that year he moved to a farm of ninety-four acres, adjoining the home farm on which he was born, and there conducted general farming operations. He was a Republican in politics, and served his township as school director. Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church, which he served as trustee.
