General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] Newcomer

This name is of frequent occurrence in the Pennsylvania archives, and shows much diversity of spelling. The first form is said to have been Neukomer. In some instances a final "t" is found instead of the "r." The name became common in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Christian was frequently used as a given name among the Newcomers.

Ulrich Newcomer cannot have been ancestor of all the Newcomers, however. Not only the frequent occurrence of the name points to this, but one of his own sons is stated to have married a Newcomer. Either, therefore, he was not the original immigrant of the name, or he was not the only one. There was a Wolfgang Newcomer, who died in March, 1771, leaving seven children, one of whom was named Christian. Wolfgang could hardly have been a son of Ulrich, even by his first marriage. It is quite probable that there are two or more distinct families of the Newcomer name; on the other hand, it is not unreasonable to think that the original immigrant may have been Ulrich Newcomer's father, and that he brought with him to America more than the one son, or had other sons born here.

It has been impossible to gather confirmation from the Lancaster County wills. In these there may readily be found a Christian Newcomer, who died leaving a widow named Barbara; but he died several years before the birth of Christian, son of Ulrich. Among the same wills there is also record of a Christian Newcomer, whose wife's name was Anna, and the names of his children, though not identical with those of the children ascribed to Christian and Barbara, are rather similar, and among them was a Christian.

The following account, it is hoped, remains most probable; it is by no means impossible that two Christian Newcomers may have lived at the same time, and each had a wife named Barbara. There seems in general to have been much similarity of names among the families of the Newcomer surname. 1
