He worked his way through Jefferson College at Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, by teaching. He finished his medical course at the Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati, and practiced medicine in Vernon, Indiana, St. Charles, Mississippi, and Indianapolis, Indiana\emdash for fifty years in the latter place. He served as brigade surgeon with the rank of major under General McClelland for three years during the Civil War. He served for sixteen years as state senator, and was for six years a member of the Indianapolis city council.
