General Notes: Husband - W. David Nelson

He was not only a prosperous man, but was characterized by a remarkable sturdy intellect. His determination to secure an education in the face of great obstacles is well illustrated by an instance in his early boyhood. In spite of his utmost exertion he was unable to secure but a meager schooling, but the first fourteen cents which he was able to save from his boyhood earnings he invested in an old school book which he literally studied to pieces. His years of perseverance were amply rewarded, for when quite a young man his self-acquired education had brought him to the position of being considered one of the most learned teachers in Venango and Crawford counties. Despite this intellectual advancement, the financial rewards of his occupation were very scant and several years of his career in this field were spent in the receipt of wages which did not exceed fifty cents a day and board.

He was born near Greenville, Mercer County, PA. He removed to Jackson Township, Venango County, in 1840, where he thereafter resided. He received his early education in the common schools. He followed farming and also taught fifteen terms of school.
