He was reared and educated in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest son, and retained the homestead farm, which he greatly improved. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church; politically he was first a Whig, and later a Republican. He was township auditor for several years, and justice of the peace ten years. In 1878 he was elected county commissioner, and served three years.
