General Notes: Husband - Capt. William H. Swearingen

He was reared and educated in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and taught school four winters. He enlisted Aug. 9, 1862, as a private in Company F, 140th Regiment. He participated in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; he was wounded at the latter, and was taken sick and conveyed to Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After his recovery he was commissioned first lieutenant of Company E, 32d Regiment United States colored troops, was promoted to captain, and served until Aug. 22, 1865.
He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church at Hanover. In politics he was a Republican, and held several township offices.
