General Notes: Husband - Joseph Barkley

He received his schooling at his native place, and later moving with his parents to East Wheatfield township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, taught at the Barkley school there for a few years; he also taught the Irish Bottom school and others. Later he learned shoemaking under his father and followed the trade in the winter season, in the summer engaging in agricultural pursuits on his ninety-six acres in Buffington township, carring on general farming. For many years he served as school director, and he was also active in church work, acting as superintendent of the Sunday school of the United Presbyterian Church, to which he belonged. In politics he was first a Whig, later a Republican.
