He was a very large, powerful man. Lumbering on the Clarion river was among the important avocations in his younger days. Drinking, fighting and carousing were side lights. It was boasted that big John Neely was "the bully" of the lumber­men on the Clarion. He went with the Argonauts to Cali­fornia and word came that his life was ended, according to what might be expected from the history of the man.
