General Notes: Husband - James Madison Murtland

He was nine years of age when his parents moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where his education was continued in the public schools of Lower Tyrone township, attending the Cunningham and Cochran schools until he was fourteen years of age. He then began working in the mines of Jimtown, his small earnings being a welcome addition to the family income. He continued in the mines until he was nineteen years of age, then went to Butler County and worked in the oil fields, and for one year attended West Sudbury Academy. He was aged twenty-one years when he returned to Fayette County, and for one year attended Mount Pleasant Academy. In 1882 he qualified as a teacher, and was appointed teacher of the Break Neck school in Bullskin township, Fayette County. He made a success of his first school and became a well-known and much sought after instructor, teaching for twenty years in the schools of Tyrone township, in the borough of Dawson, principal at Fairchance and at New Haven, Pennsylvania. In 1885 he went to Decatur, Kansas, where he filed a homestead claim and taught two terms in a sod school house. In 1887 he sold his equity in his claim and returned to Fayette County. Beginning October 1, 1904, he was deputy collector of United States internal revenue service for the Ninth division of the Twenty-third Pennsylvania district. He was a Republican in politics and served as township auditor and school director. He and his family were members of Tyrone Presbyterian church, and he belonged to the Masonic order and the Royal Arcanum.
