He attended the township schools and was brought up to farm work on the old homestead. After the death of his father he took charge of this property, owning 110 acres of valuable land in Wayne township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, on which he carried on general farming. There was one gas well on his property, and it was also underlaid with coal.
He was a Democrat, served as school director, and was also treasurer of his township. A member of the Reformed Church, he served as an elder.
