General Notes: Husband - John William Ruth

He was born on a farm near Scottdale, Pennsylvania, and he attended the best schools in that part of the state. In his young manhood he entered upon his business career, and purchased the well-known Westmoreland planing mill business in the early eighties, from Peter S. Loucks. In 1889, he was one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Scottdale, and he continued as a member of its board of directors to the time of his death; and he was also one of the organizers and was president for many years of the Scottdale Savings and Trust Company. Mr. Ruth was a director and treasurer of the National Foundry and Pipe Works, Ltd., before that concern became merged with the United States Cast Iron Pipe and Iron Foundry Company, and he continued with the new firm at the time of the absorption in 1899. He was also one of the organizers, and member of the Board of Directors of the Old Meadow Rolling Mill Company, which was later submerged into the American Sheet and Tin Plate Company; also director and one of the organizers of the first electric light plant in Scottdale, which was later sold to the West Penn Power Company.
Throughout his life, Mr. Ruth was a careful reader of the best literature, and as a traveler, he visited the Holy Land and Egypt in 1907, afterwards making a tour of the principal cities of Europe and the African coast, in company with Rev. W. R. Funk, a former pastor of the United Brethren Church at Scottdale. His fraternal affiliations were with Lodge No. 562, Free and Accepted Masons, of Scottdale; the Commandery of the Knights Templar, at Greensburg; and the Pittsburgh Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; and with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Knights of Pythias; and the Knights of Malta. His religious faith was that of the United Brethren, and he held important committee appointments in the Allegheny Conference of that church.
