He obtained a liberal education, studied law and was admitted a member of the Berks County bar May 8, 1816, and became private secretary of Governor Joseph Hiester from 1820 to 1823. Soon after the latter date he removed to Ohio, became a member of the Legislature of that State, and later, was a representative from Ohio in the Twentieth Congress.
