He was graduated from Jefferson College when eighteen years of age, and devoted his life to teaching. For many years he was Professor of Greek in the University of Pennsylvania.

He was an illustrious educator, professor in four colleges and president of two.

For over 50 years he was an eminent professor of four colleges, minister, president for eleven years of Muhlenberg College.

He and his wife left several children.
