After receiving his early education in the schools of the home district, he attended, three terms, the State Normal School, Edinboro, Erie County, Pennsylvania. He early engaged in teaching and taught four terms in Hayfield Township, Crawford County, and five in Cussewago Township, having the school at Mosiertown one term.
He held the offices of School Director, Township Clerk, and Treasurer, and later held the position of Assessor. In politics he was a Republican.
