He graduated from Fredonia Institute in 1897. He enlisted for the Spanish war in Company K, Fifteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, served nine months and was then honorably discharged. He taught school for a time and was later a clerk in the engineering department of the Westinghouse Company in Pittsburgh.
