General Notes: Husband - G. D. Swain

He received his primary education in the public schools of Jackson township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, subsequently attended Zelienople Academy, and later was engaged in teaching for twelve years. In 1862 he enlisted in Company C, One Hundred and Thirty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Quay, and served nine months, participating in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, besides several skirmishes. In 1871 he embarked in merchandising at Harmony, where he built up an extensive business, one of the largest, if not the largest, in that part of the county.
He and his family were members of the Lutheran church, in which organization he filled the office of deacon, and he was also a member of the standing committee. In politics, he was a stanch Democrat, and took an active interest in political matters. He was a school director for twenty years, was a burgess of Harmony for ten consecutive terms, and served as a delegate to the State conventions. In 1886 he was the Democratic nominee for the legislature, and though he made a good race, he was defeated, as the county was strongly Republican. He was a progressive and enterprising business man, and won the respect and confidence of the people of Butler County. He was one of the leading spirits in the erection of the soldier's monument at Butler.
