General Notes: Husband - Robert Reed

He was a cabinet maker and worked at his trade near Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, until about 1840, when he settled on what was later known as Chestnut Cliff farm, in Jefferson County, in the vicinity of Beaver Run church, which stood about one mile from Bellview.

He was an old line Abolitionist and many a runaway slave made his escape to freedom on the "Underground Railroad," which had one of its stations at his home. Not only for freedom for the slave, but from the shackles of custom which prevailed at that time of whiskey at frolics, he was pronounced. Neighbors were few and far between when the country was a wilderness. Men and overgrown boys came together from great distances and traveled from farm to farm, assisting each other rolling together the immense growth of timber to be burned. It was at Reed's where the first "log rolling" was made without whiskey. His wife remonstrated, arguing that he would be accounted stingy. "No," he said, "we must have the best dinner and supper that can possibly be set, but whiskey I will not have, as some of the young men drink too much." Some of the best men complimented Reed for his bold stand. This was the first but not the last "dry" rolling.

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Mount

She was a descendant of Walter Bruce of Scotland, being a great-great-granddaughter of Jacob Young and Elenor Tully who came to Baltimore with Lord Baltimore in 1632.
