General Notes: Husband - Samuel Wilson

---

He worked with his father and brothers on the farm, and began business life as clerk in the store of Charles Evans, but in 1834 engaged in business for himself. He quickly saw the possibilities of the iron industry and became a large manufacturer of pig iron. He built the St. Charles furnace in Porter township, in company with his brother John, and also own­ed the Helen Furnace in Highland township. He was largely interested in timber lands, owned saw mills and lumber yards, built flat­boats, and owned several stores; in all his operations he employed several hundred men. He was a shrewd buyer and most capable busi­ness man, acquiring a great deal of wealth and prominence. He founded the First National Bank of Clarion, and was its president from its organization until his death. At the out­break of the civil war, Governor Curtin com­missioned him an agent for the purchase of supplies for the Pennsylvania troops. He was a Republican in politics and a Methodist in religious faith.

Her parents died when she was young, as did her only brother William. She was taken into the fam­ily of John Strattan, the founder of Strattan­ville, and with him came to Pennsylvania.
