In 1887 she preempted a 1/4 section of land in Colorado, liv­ing on it all alone 6 months. She writes amusingly of walk­ing out to her claim where she had erected a mansion, a 10 x 12 pine shanty, here she was 2 1/2 miles from any mere man. She further writes, "I have always enjoyed my claim experiences. It was such a novelty compared to the hum­drum cut and dried-ness of most women's lives; for as you know, most women marry and their lives are one merry round of cooking, scrubbing and raising one homely baby after another, so they make a good showing in the genealogical book, which is seldom written but when it is we old maids lose out with 'unmarried'."
