He was born in Muddy Creek township, Butler county, PA, and was reared on the old family homestead. In 1856 he settled on a farm, where his brother John would later reside, and lived there until 1859. In that year he purchased another farm of 100 acres, in Brady township, which he then cleared and improved. He was a member of Slippery Rock United Presbyterian church, in which he filled the office of trustee. He was a stanch Republican, and served as school director, and held other minor offices in his township. For about twenty years he was a director and agent of the Worth Mutual Insurance Company.
